I love breakfast. It is one of my simple pleasures. There is something about breakfast that puts me in a happy place. On the weekends, I will often stumble out of the house, groggy eyed and half awake, in search of that comfort food I so enjoy. This past Saturday morning, I did not feel like waiting in line or being bumped around a crowded restaurant while I waited for a table, so I ruled out going to some of the more popular breakfast spots and decided to try someplace new, Oaks Family Restaurant. Oaks Family Restaurant is what you might expect of a typical diner; understated appearance, slightly dated décor, standard food options. . . . and completely unpretentious. When I walked in I was welcomed warmly, and I had my choice of seating. I flipped my coffee cup, and it was immediately filled--Instant gratification, I love it! The menu is pretty basic, so I ordered my breakfast go-to, Western Omelette. A friend of mine decided to order the Steak and Eggs. And we both requested that our accompanying home fries include onions, as another Yelper had mentioned in a review. Upon this request, our waitress, Lena, lit up and said, "That's the best!" When our food arrived, sure enough, the home fries were the best part of the meal. I happily devoured them. My omelette was perfectly cooked and oozing with American cheese. . . not gourmet by any means, but good regardless. Unfortunately, my friend's steak was completely underwhelming. His disappointment was evident with the couple of bites he attempted to take, so when Lena came by to check on us we asked her if he could get something else. I always dread asking to send something back, but Lena was incredibly understanding and SUPER accommodating! With a motherly quality, she was eager to please and insisted upon bringing a fresh plate. The steak was quickly replaced with the corned beef hash we requested. The hash was good, but most likely just came out of a can. My friend and I finished our breakfast and lingered, catching up and discussing plans for the day, while Lena kept sweeping by, smiling, and refilling our coffee cups. There was no pressure to rush out. All things considered, it was a very relaxing morning, and an enjoyable experience. While the food at Oaks Family Restaurant isn't incredibly remarkable, it's good (although would probably recommend avoiding the steak), it's quick, it's cheap, and it definitely has a "home cooked" feel to it. I'd go back again to save making a mess of my own kitchen. Food Rating: 3 Stars. The best thing about this place is the service! This is what earns Oaks Family Restaurant an extra star. Lena and the other servers were incredibly friendly, my coffee cup never went empty, and I felt completely at ease and taken care of. It was a nice way to start my weekend.

This is one of those hidden treasures people love to find! The food is always great, and the service is great, as well. If you see "Tomato Basil" as one of the daily soups, you MUST try it! It is one of the best soups I have ever had! The owner makes it himself, and I always do a happy dance when it's available. Love this place!

Good food, affordable, and excellent service. We had the friendliest servers here and I love eating breakfast early as there's usually a very light crowd. They have delicious omelettes and American fries are perfectly crisped. I've yet to try it here for lunch or dinner, so I can't comment on that menu. But breakfast is highly recommended.

I stopped in here on a snowy morning after an early AM doctor's appointment in Royal Oak. Traffic report on WWJ noted that I-75 was at a stand still from Troy to the downtown area. Time to pull over and hang out. I pulled into Oaks and nobody was there. I sat at the counter and received a very friendly welcome and personalized service. I ordered the big breakfast that had ham, bacon and sausage on it. The sausage links are enormous and porky deliciousness. Coffee flowed like wine and I never saw the bottom of my cup. The soup pots were right in front of me and I was told they were homemade. They were homemade indeed and when you order a bowl, you get a huge bowl and all for $2.00. This would be $5.00 every other place. Great experience. Clean restaurant and good service.

8-9 years ago, my sweet baby daughter had to pee really bad and we spun in here for a quick bathroom stop and stayed for some breakfast. My daughter is now 10 and this is still her favorite place to get breakfast. The food is good, nothing too crazy but very consistent and fresh.....but the service, HOLY COW is absolutely ridiculous! A lot of regulars and everyone is treated really well by the staff. We always sit at the bar and we usually have a fantastic lady spoiling the living shit out of my daughter. They "ooooh" and "aaaahhh" over her and make her feel great. My in-laws are converted fans as well.....unbelievable service, love this place big time. Marry me, Anna Banana!

Fantastic and inexpensive breakfast just east of downtown Royal Oak. Great gyros and surprisingly solid fries. Homemade omeletes and fresh crispy taters. And it costs almost literally nothing to eat here.

Had dinner there a few weeks ago, had the polish plate special , lots of food for the money and it was delicious, they even pan fried the pierogi's per request, which is the only way to eat them. Bread and rolls were very good and very friendly service.

This has become our Friday lunch place. Good food, inexpensive and good service. Also is away from the business lunch crowd so you can get a table right away. Awesome Patty and Tuna Melts.

Originally, I was going to rate this as two stars because I've definitely had better diner breakfasts. Then I thought about how inexpensive the meal was & decided it was "A-OK" for the price, for sure. The service was slow to start, but improved, & the coffee refills were quick to come. The American fries were pretty great with the $0.25 added onions, & the bacon was cooked well, but the scrambled eggs & pancakes were okay at best. I doubt I'll be back.
